We receive phone calls and emails at our studio everyday from people who have questions about our process of creating fine portraitature. The information below is a cummulation of the most commonly asked questions. Our goal is to help get you started and to make your portrait experience at Olsen Portrait Design as easy and stress-free as possible.
What should we wear?
One of the most pressing questions I get from my clients is about what they (and perhaps the others in the session) should wear. The possibilities are endless as are the chances to pick clothes that won't work good in a photo. A few general rules to consider when picking outfits are as follows.
First, and most important, wear something that you are comfortable in; while you certainly can buy new clothes for the session, I've found that clothes you are familiar with make for better portraits. Dark jeans with solid earth tone tops work well.
AVOID the bold, bright patterns or clothing that will be dated and will soon be out of style. You don’t want to look like a bullseye in a family group. Bright, bold patterns will distract the eye when viewing portraits so stay away from dramatic patterns (e.g. floral and zig-zag) as these tend to distract from the subject. Remember the portrait is of the subject, not the clothing!
Please avoid tight fitting clothing, short shorts and very short mini skirts. When posing in these outfits, it is hard to maneuver, especially if you are posed sitting on the ground or on a step in an outdoor setting.
I would start with classic attire — simple necklines, classic solid colors (like earth tones) and long sleeves work best. Then you can add accessories, like scarfs, jewerly and hats. Again, keep it simple and solid colors.
Second, Finally, don't try to matchy-match with any other subjects in the session, rather try to complement their selected outfit with similar and complimenting colors.
Where should we take our portraits?
Our studio is comfortable, air conditioned and can accommodate most portrait sessions, average session being one person up to 12-15 person family group. Studio sessions can be casual or formal, whereas outdoor tends to be more casual and rustic. Remember, when photographing outdoors, we are in nature, so we may run into an occasional fire ant or mosquito. It’s all part of being outdoors in Texas.
What's included in the session fee?
The session fee covers the studio time, photographer time and facilities. The session fee does not include any portraits, it is strictly a professional fee.
How long is the session and how many photographs will you take?
Typical a session lasts about 60-90 minutes, depending on the type of session. Small children may need a little more time to feel comfortable. For a average session, you can expect to view anywhere between 30 and 60 images, depending on the type of session and size of the group being photographed.
How quickly will we see our images after the session?
We will schedule a viewing session at your portrait session. The viewing session will be within 10-14 days after your portrait session, depending on schedules. Generally we allow 90 minutes for a viewing session.
What types of products do you offer?
I offer a wide variety of high-end products including photographic prints, wall sized canvas gallery wrap collections, custom holiday & personal notecards, albums and more.
Are our photographs retouched?
Basic retouching (removal of blemishes, scars, stray hairs, etc.) for those images ordered as prints or products is included. If there is extensive retouching needed, we will quote all necessary artwork before work is started.
What is the turn-around time on portrait orders?
Generally, portrait order takes 3-4 weeks to be processed & delivered. We do our best to deliver your order as soon as possible. If you have a specific deadline, please let us know before your portrait session so we can plan accordingly.
How far in advance do we need to book?
Sessions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Popular times such as Fall & Spring and Saturdays book quickly.
When is payment for the session required?

Yes! Outdoor sessions are usually scheduled early evening or early morning in order take advantage of the best natural light. Children are generally best in the morning. Having already slept and eaten beforehand makes babies especially agreeable during portrait sessions.

What if I need to rechedule my portrait appointment?
In the event that you need to reschedule your session, we ask you to please give us a 48 hour notice so we may accommodate other appointments. We will reschedule one time. There will be a $50 fee if you need to reschedule more than once.
